Lady ‘Cats and Dogs fight to split

HOME SAFELY — Alli Bertozzi and Amber Palmer return after scoring safely to help their team in a win over Bridgeport on Saturday.
The Lady Wildcats softball team faced a turbulent week as they dropped four contests before they put a mark up in the ‘W’ column against Bridgeport on Saturday.

It started on a rough note as Paden City traveled to New Matamoras to take on a talented Frontier team. Vicki Yurisko broke up a no-hitter, but the team fell 10-0 against the Lady Cougars.

Kim Davis, who pitched well despite the score for the Lady Wildcats, gave up seven hits while striking out three Cougar batters. Frontier scored five runs in the third and five more the last three innings to gain the nod.

Continuing the road trip, Coach Penny Baker’s team went to Beallsville to take on the Lady Devils. While they played a close contest, they came up on the short end losing 10-7.

Davis struck out an incredible 13 batters while walking only five. She received offensive support from the likes of Courtney Conaway and Sydney Frye. Conaway hit safely for a single three times and batted in two runs while Frye singled twice and had one RBI. The rest of the team split five hits and had only two errors.

The Paden City Lady Wildcats won the second game of a double-header April 12 with the homestanding Bridgeport Bulldogs, 11-8, after falling 17-3 in the first game.

In the opener, the Lady Bulldogs scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings to make quick work of the ‘Cats in a mercy-rule shortened game.

Kim Davis, who struck out six and walked seven in the first game, was tabbed with the loss from the rubber. Vicki Yurisko belted a double and plated all three of the ‘Cats runs.

In the finale, the Wildcats fell behind 2-0 in the first, but retaliated with five runs in the second to take the lead. The Lady ‘Dogs came right back to score four runs in the bottom half of inning two, to grab a 6-5 lead.

When Paden City started to pull away in the third with three runs, Bridgeport fought back to knot the game at eight heading into the final three frames.

The Wildcats played superb defense that helped Davis hold the ‘Dogs in check the rest of the way. The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh, while Davis & Co. blanked Bridgeport to gain the third victory of the season.

Davis was the winning pitcher. She struck out 11 and walked six in going the distance. Ashley Efaw singled twice and brought home three runs, while Ally Bertozzi singled, tripled and plated two to lead the Lady ‘Cats. Angelica Phillips brought home a run on a pair of singles, while Yurisko plated a triple for Paden City.

The Wildcats will host the River Lady Pilots April 16 at 5 p.m. in what appears to be an interesting matchup. The two teams played a tightly contested game in Hannibal earlier this season.
