TALLENT TAKES OFF — Roby Tallent does attempts his part in the hit and run against the Cougars on Friday. |
While pitching is important to all good baseball teams, hitting sometimes can be just as valued when producing in high numbers. Unfortunately for the Silver Knights, those times have recently came after the opposition does it first.
In their doubleheader against Ravenswood on Saturday to end the week, Tyler Consolidated took a 2-0 lead after one inning of play before the Red Devils bats hit the ball every which way and scored 10 runs in the second to answer.
After a scoreless second, the Silver Knights responded with a four-run third and two-run fourth inning to close the game within two. Ravenswood held them at bay scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth, but Tyler Consolidated regained momentum and was able to tie the game at 12 with four runs in the fifth.
The Knights had an excellent chance to take the lead as Matt Marsh rounded third on a base hit, but the Red Devils defense was able to trap him before tagging him in the rundown.
It would prove costly for the Silver Knights.
The game remained scoreless for the next to innings, causing the game to go into extra innings. There Ravenswood would score a single run which ended up being a game winner in a hard-fought 13-12 game by both teams.
Offensively, the Knights had an excellent game with Logan Efaw, Zach Perkey and Brody Northcraft all gaining three hits. Efaw batted in four runs and Perkey received one RBI. Zack Minger had two hits and equally shared four RBIs with Sean Morris.
Pitching wise, Tyler Consolidated had a contribution of four players on the hill. Efaw started the game and had a strikeout. Blaise Rice came on for him and threw four innings. Kurt Long came on after and struck out one. Perkey finished out the game with two strike outs.
After a short break after the game, the bottom end of the double header started but was suspended after the rain started pouring down.
The Silver Knights traveled to New Matamoras on Friday to battle a talented Frontier squad. Again, there were signs of the offense coming alive, but the overall effort wasn’t enough as errors and strong at-bats by Frontier led to another mercy-rule shortened game.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars reached home plate first in the second inning scoring four runs. The floodgates continued to be open in the third with seven more runs scored before Tyler Consolidated could generate any sort of offensive attack.
In the top of the fourth, the Silver Knights scored all of their six runs to make the game close. Zack Minger, Zach Perkey, Michael Cochran, Kurt Long, Sean Morris and Brian Gregg all scored a run to cut the score to 11-6. Gregg registered two RBIs while Long and Morris each had one. Northcraft and Tallent also reached base safely with a pair of singles.
Despite breaking up Frontier’s momentum, it didn’t take long for the Cougars to take it back. In the bottom frame, they were able to score five runs to end the game via mercy-rule 16-6.
On Wednesday, Tyler Consolidated took one on the chin as they crossed the river to travel to Woodsfield to play Monroe Central.
Earlier in the season, the Seminoles defeated the Knights 6-4 a day after beating Magnolia 12-0. This time the Silver Knights would not be so close.
Monroe Central started off fast with a nine-run first inning and followed that up with a four-run burst in the third.
Tyler Consolidated wouldn’t get on the board until the fifth inning when they scored two runs on a single by Garrett Amos. Kurt Long singled to reach base to start the setup for the score. The next couple of batters were called out before Roby Tallent singled to left.
Zack Knowlton walked to load the bases before Amos belted the ball to right field, driving in Long and Tallent.
Tyler Consolidated used a concoction of pitchers in this game as well, with Brian Gregg, Long, Marsh, and Sean Morris.
Additional hitting came from Nortcraft, Minger, and Perkey.
The Silver Knights were scheduled to play Parkersburg Catholic last night, but the game was postponed because of inclement weather.
Tyler Consolidated is slated to play at Calhoun County in an LKC placement game later this week.
Additionally the LKC championships will be played at Tyler Consolidated High School on Thursday.
